Department of Geography, IIS (deemed to be) University organized its orientation for undergraduate students on 2nd September 2022 in order to make the new students familiarize with department, its functioning, and faculties. It also aimed to inform them about activities conducted by the department, course structure, timetable, examination, and evaluation pattern. The session was convened by Ms. Nikita Vijay (Assistant Professor) and the activities organized during the orientation were supervised by Dr. Uzma Parveen (Associate Professor) and Mrs. Renu Singh (Assistant Professor). The welcome address was delivered by the Head of the Department, Prof. R.S. Vijayvergia (Professor). He said that the students’ performance is assessed continuously throughout the year, hence it is very crucial for students to attend the class regularly, participate in class activities and other events organized by the department and institute. Further, he informed the students to take the assignment seriously and submit them on time. He then introduced all the faculty members of the department, their qualification, achievements, etc. Prof. Vijayvergia reiterated that all the faculty members are eager to help and assist the new students. Further, he explained the significance of determining goals and achieving them. He spoke that in students’ life both intelligence and diligence are important. He also elaborated on the concept of IPPH- Interest (for doing the things religiously), Practice (to build confidence), Power (strength to achieve the goal), and Hope (to be positive) which are needed to achieve the desired goal. He then sited Paul Arden and the concept of GRIT given by Angela Duckworth according to which diligence is more important than intelligence to achieve any goal in life.
Afterwards, the students were informed about their syllabus, time-table, course structure, and evaluation pattern. Towards the end, few games were organized by the senior students who were also volunteering to make the new students interact in the class. This was also a kind of ice-breaking session. These games included Hot-Potato Camera, which was a funny emoji selfie competition, Romeo-Julliet where students had to partner with a fellow student and deliver a small talk on geography related themes, and dumb-charades were organized. The winners of each game were also presented with gifts and with this the orientation was winded up.
